Keeping my culture, heritage alive
When someone back in Malaysia (sometimes ignorantly) asks me, “What are you” or “Where are you from” – I would have liked to direct them to this page! 😂
My paternal lineage is an indigenous group in Sarawak, Malaysia called the “Lun Bawang”, originating from the highlands of Borneo island (which houses Malaysia, Brunei & Indonesia). It’s a minority indigenous group of possibly 20,000 persons. As I grew older, I began taking more interest in documenting practices, traditions, and life in Ba’Kelalan, Sarawak. My late dad would tell me many stories, and showed me life there. This is a way to remember him by, and so that these stories can also be passed on to generations like my little niece.
My maternal lineage is from the Cantonese, Chinese – first originating from China before my grandfather migrated to Malaysia at a young age in the early 1900s! I grew up with a mixture of different cultures, traditions, and practices which has made life all the more colorful (upon reflection!).
BORNEO, MALAYSIA will be a compilation of all of these, including my favourites and tips if you ever want to visit Malaysia!
